Aikido is a dynamic Japanese martial art originally developed by Master Morihei Ueshiba during the first half of the twentieth century.  It is not only an effective self-defence system but also a method of strengthening the mind and body to produce a more integrated person.  “Aikido” means: the way (do) of harmony (ai) and the spirit/energy (ki).

The movements in Aikido are influenced by the arts of sword and spear fighting, ju jutsu, aiki jutsu and other schools of martial arts. However, Aikido is directly related to defence against unprovoked attacks; there are no aggressive moves.

The focus is on the development of ki (inner energy) and your hara (centre) and how to use these to enhance the circularity, power and flow of your movements. You will learn how to improve your breathing, posture, relaxation and mental focus in order to be more aware of yourself and your surroundings. This helps to release tension and worry that would otherwise hinder you in Aikido and also daily life!
